About the project…
Komorebi & Flor de Jagua Botanical Art Studio© is an artistic endeavor by Ricardo Arribas, a multidisciplinary and electroacoustic artist, academic and writer currently based in Puerto Rico. The Ecoprint and the Botanical Gyotaku series is an ongoing project which reflects the artist’s enduring interest in exploring and experimenting with vegetative matter as an expressive medium. He uses anything from mature fallen leaves, soil, flowers, seeds, stems, bark, tobacco, tea or coffee grinds to create suggestive textures and abstract images reminiscent of fossils, archaological remnants, ancient scripture, scapes that appear at the intersection between the postapocaliptic, the oneiric and the expressionistic. He is interested in exploring and developing botanical art’s potential to reconnect humans with natural spaces.
About the artist…
Ricardo Arribas is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, researcher, and literature professor. Since he was young, he has alternated his literary training with studies in video art and sound for the moving image, graphic art, and electroacoustic composition techniques with various artists and musicians such as Carlos Vivoni (USC), Antonio Martorrel (UPR), Martín García(UPR), Carlos Malavé (USC/COPU-UPR), Robert Honor (Tisch-NYU), Kisha Tikina Burgos (PR) Marylin Ryvchin (Cornell), Kevin Ernste(Cornell), Imna Arroyo (Yale), Ismari Caraballo, Fernando Santiago Camacho, Poli Marichal, Baruch Vergara, Marcos de Jesús Carrión, Cristal Rovira. After completing doctoral studies in Caribbean and Latin American literature at Cornell University and dedicating himself to teaching, he dedicates part of his time to the creation of sound and visual works inspired by his space, using techniques and materials that respect the natural environment. During his more than twenty years of teaching, the artist has taught many courses on literature and cinema, literary theory and creative writing topics at various prestigious higher education institutions, from Cornell University, University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras, the Inter American University, to the Instituto de Formación Docente Salomé Ureña (ISFODOSU) in Dominican Republic.
He has published about Caribbean and Latin American literature, art, cinema and culture at large, as well as Archipelagic and Oceanian art and literature. His poetry book La busca de Ísola will soon be published by La secta de los Perros publishing house. He is also a columnist and collaborates regularly in several cultural and literary online newspapers and magazines, where he writes periodically about contemporary cultural and political issues. Komorebi & Flor de Jagua Botanical Art Studio es una iniciativa artística de Ricardo Arribas, artista multidisciplinario, artista electroacústico, académico y escritor, actualmente radicado en Puerto Rico.
La serie Ecoprint y Botanical Gyotaku es un proyecto en curso que refleja el interés constante del artista por explorar y experimentar con materia vegetal como medio para crear arte. Utiliza cualquier material, desde hojas caídas maduras, tierra, flores, tallos, corteza, tabaco, posos de té o café para crear texturas e imágenes abstractas. Le interesa explorar y desarrollar el potencial del arte botánico para reconectar a los humanos con los espacios naturales.
Sobre el artista…
Ricardo Arribas es un artista multidisciplinario, escritor, investigador y profesor de literatura. Desde joven ha alternado sus formación literaria con estudios en videoarte, cinematografía, arte gráfico, y técnicas de composición electroacústicas con varios artistas y músicos como Carlos Vivoni, Antonio Martorrel, Martín García, Carlos Malavé, Marylin Ryvchin, Kevin Ernste, Imna Arroyo, Ismari Caraballo, Fernando Santiago Camacho, Marcos De Jesús Carrión, Cristal Rovira, Poli Marichal, Baruch Vergara.
Luego de terminar estudios doctorales en literatura caribeña y latinoamericana en la Universidad de Cornell y dedicarse a la docencia, dedica parte de su tiempo a la creación de obras sonoras y visuales inspirándose en su espacio natural, usando técnicas y materiales que respeten el entorno natural. Durante sus más de veinte años de docencia, el artista ha impartido numerosos cursos sobre literatura y cine, teoría literaria y escritura creativa en diversas instituciones de educación superior de prestigio, desde la Universidad de Cornell, la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Río Piedras y la Universidad Interamericana, hasta el Instituto de Formación Docente Salomé Ureña (ISFODOSU) en República Dominicana.
Ha publicado sobre literatura, arte, cine y cultura caribeña y latinoamericana en general, así como sobre arte y literatura archipelágica y oceánica. Su poemario "La busca de Ísola" será publicado próximamente por la editorial La secta de los Perros. También es columnista y colabora regularmente en varios periódicos y revistas digitales culturales y literarias, donde escribe periódicamente sobre temas culturales y políticos contemporáneos.
Vive actualmente en Caguas, Puerto Rico.
